PDF download Download Article

Blue Exorcist is a popular anime series about a half-demon boy training to become an exorcist. After a long hiatus, seasons 4 and 5 are finally here, and with them comes a renewed interest in the series. So, what’s the best way to watch it? An anime expert partnered with wikiHow to provide the answer and outline the recommended watch order for the series. We’ll also explain the three most popular watch orders (release order, chronological order, and canonical order), plus where to watch the series, what it’s about, and more!

What’s the best order to watch Blue Exorcist?

Anime expert Richard Moore recommends watching Blue Exorcist in release order. To do this, simply watch the show, OVAs, and movie in the order they were released. If you’re interested in watching in canonical order instead, only watch the first 17 episodes of season 1, then watch the other seasons in release order.

    • Blue Exorcist season 1
    • Blue Exorcist: Runaway Kuro (OVA)

How to Watch Blue Exorcist in Manga-Canon Order

PDF download Download Article
  1. Like many anime series, Blue Exorcist contains some episodes that are exclusive to the anime, meaning they aren’t in the original manga. Moore says Season 1 splits off from the canonical story following episode 16, so you can skip the rest of the season if you’re not interested in filler and go right into Season 2.[4] Here’s the complete canonical watch order:[5]
    • Blue Exorcist season 1 (episodes 1-16)
    • Blue Exorcist: Runaway Kuro (OVA)
    • Blue Exorcist: Kyoto Saga (season 2)
    • Blue Exorcist: Shimane Illuminati Saga (season 3)
    • Blue Exorcist: Beyond the Snow Saga (season 4)
    • Blue Exorcist: The Blue Night Saga (season 5)
    • Note: Blue Exorcist: The Movie contains some canon aspects, but most of it is not canon, so you can skip it. Moore says that the movie is a standalone, but if you want to watch it, watch it after you complete season 1.[6]
