The Most Popular Video Game Characters of All Time

Ever since Pong released in 1972, video games have enjoyed a long, lush, and bountiful history full of color, chaos, and larger-than-life characters. But who are the most iconic characters in video games? There are a lot of options, but recently, BAFTA took a vote to find the best of the best. We’re here to give you the rundown:


1. Lara Croft (Tomb Raider): The Tomb Raider herself took the number one spot, edging out some tough competition. Lara first arrived on the scene in 1996, and since then, she’s been swinging, sliding, and shooting her way through sequels, remakes, and movie adaptations on her hunt for treasure.

2. Mario (Super Mario Bros.): It’s no surprise the red plumber is on this list (but where’s his brother?). Mario first appeared in 1981, and ever since, he’s enjoyed the spotlight as one of gaming’s highest-profile heroes, and also one of the most prolific and versatile.

3. Agent 47 (Hitman): This is the biggest surprise on this list, at least to us. For someone genetically engineered to blend in, Agent 47 sure stands out in video game history, and has since his first appearance in 2000. You'd better hope nobody orders a hit on you, because you’d stand no chance against the world’s deadliest (and sometimes goofiest) hitman.

4. Sonic (Sonic the Hedgehog): What is there to say about the Blue Blur that hasn’t already been said? Mario’s formidable, speedier rival, Sonic, first sprinted onto screens in 1991, and he hasn’t slowed down since.

5. Sackboy (Little Big Planet): Here’s another unexpected entry, but there’s no doubt that the crocheted Sony mascot holds a dear place in our hearts (even if his prime is past). Here’s still hoping for another creative collect-a-thon featuring our favorite stuffed Sackboy!

6. Pac-Man (Pac-Man): Another gaming giant, Pac-Man is a classic character, and most other gaming characters’ great-great-great-grandpa. Sure, he doesn’t have a whole lot of personality of his own, but who can resist that big old grin?

7. Link (The Legend of Zelda): The hero of Hyrule has definitely earned his spot on this list. How many times has he saved the realm from Ganondorf? Almost too many times to count, and in too many timelines to keep track of. Keep swinging that sword, Link! One day, you’ll defeat the big guy for good, we’re sure of it.

8. Master Chief (Halo): He’s a one-man space army, kicking alien butts all across the galaxy. He also kind of revolutionized shooter games on console, but it’s all in a day’s work for the helmeted hero.

9. Kratos (God of War): The white-painted, rage-filled Kratos has been smashing gods and taking names since 2005, and with the 2018 reboot of the series, he’s also been playing the part of tender, protective father figure. Oh yeah, he’s got the range.

10. Shadowheart (Baldur’s Gate 3): Now here’s a more recent entry! Larian Studio’s Baldur’s Gate 3 made major waves when it released in 2023, and Shadowheart is by far the most popular character in the player’s party.
