Minecraft horror stories are practically never-ending, and Null is an especially frightening one. Null is an entity that spawns into your game and slowly wreaks havoc, and his lore runs surprisingly deep. We talked to Minecraft experts Pixlriffs and Jose Rivera to help us dive into Null’s lore, what the Unknown Null mod is, whether or not the entity is real, and more! Read on to learn all about this dark digital demon.

Who is the Minecraft entity Null?

According to Pixlriffs, Null is an all-black entity with glowing eyes that spawns in your game and corrupts it. At first, he may float in the sky or behave like a player, but as you continue to encounter him, strange things will happen. He may type messages, jumpscare you, instantly kill you, or crash your game.

Unknown Null is a mod that spawns Null, an entity who corrupts your world. Pixlriffs says, “Unknown Null is a mod published by zDerpz which allows players to add a mysterious entity to their world. Typically appearing as a pitch-black player with glowing eyes, the entity appears and disappears during gameplay, affecting the world in ways that lend a horror atmosphere to Minecraft.”^{[1]

Null is a soul entity that behaves like a player. Once you install the mod, Null joins the game after 15 minutes, spawning (or floating) in a random location. When you first encounter him, he may just seem like a random entity. But as he continues to make appearances, Null will interfere with your game more and more, chasing and attacking you as he does.^{[3]

Null crashes your game and jumpscares you, among other things. The Unknown Null mod gives Null a host of game-breaking abilities, like being able to type messages into the chat and strike you with lightning. When you scare or get too close to Null, the camera focuses on him and plays a loud sound to jumpscare you as he disappears. He can also show up wearing Iron Armor and holding an Iron Pickaxe when you’re exploring caves, so be on the lookout. Other things Null can do include:^{[4]

A Creepypasta recounts when a player encountered Null and Herobrine. In the Creepypasta, the player logged into an older version of Minecraft and had a brief encounter with Herobrine (a mythical Minecraft entity that resembles the main character Steve and randomly spawns in your world to allegedly wreak havoc). Herobrine led the player to a sign that read “null” using redstone torches, then his game froze. After that, the player reached out to Mojang, but was told that “We cannot say anything discussing the matter of Herobrine.”^{[5]

After Mojang declined to respond, the player updated his game and started a new world. They spawned in a plains biome, but when they weren’t able to build shelter for 3 in-game days, they logged off. When they logged back on, they spawned in at bedrock level in a narrow hallway. They walked down the hall, but were met with another redstone torch, and another, and another, until they reached a sign.^{[7]

The sign was in Swedish, and as they started reading it, the corrupted noise started blaring like it was asking for help. Then, all of the audio cut out. The player took a screenshot before exiting his game, then translated the sign. The sign read “Help! Null is here! Tell everyone about me!” It made the player’s heart turn cold.^{[8]

The player logged back in and spawned in the sky with nothing in their inventory, then saw Herobrine. He told them that all of the lore about him being evil was a lie and that it was really Null behind it all. He explained that Null had framed him and was an evil entity who wanted to take over the entire Minecraft game. Then, Null corrupted the player’s world.^{[9]

Is Null real?

No, Null does not exist in vanilla (unmodified) Minecraft. Although the lore connects Null to the early versions of Minecraft, in reality, he’s just from a Creepypasta by the YouTuber AlongCameJosh and an entity included in the Unknown Null mod. In the mod, however, he does real damage and can make your game crash, destroy builds, and change your game mode, among other things, so be careful if you install the mod!
- Pixlriffs notes that Unknown Null and many other Minecraft horror fiction, mods, and ARGs “owe a lot to the early ‘Herobrine’ hoax, in which a player claimed to have had their world invaded by the ghost of a player who appeared as the Minecraft default skin ‘Steve,’ but with all-white eyes.” He adds that “this was one of the first and most successful attempts to use Minecraft as a medium for telling horror stories, and many current Minecraft horror stories and mods are inspired by it.”^{[10]

Don’t Turn Left at the Crossroads The line “Don’t turn left at the crossroads” is from the Minecraft ARG “Searching for a World That Doesn’t Exist.” In the ARG, a player comes across a book that warns him, “Whatever you do, don’t turn left at the crossroads.” Then, he discovers a Google Drive folder with videos of his world, which has mysterious builds and blocks. As the videos go on, the player is haunted by a mysterious entity that soon drives him mad.
- The mysterious entity haunting the player is The King in Yellow, a cosmic being that drives others mad by exposing them to knowledge beyond their comprehension.

The Legend of Herobrine The legend of Herobrine is a classic tale that goes back to the early days of Minecraft. Like Null, Herobrine was an entity that was said to mysteriously appear in your world and slowly wreak havoc, placing random blocks, mining out 2x2 structures, and randomly killing you or crashing your game when he had the chance.

Entity 303 According to Rivera, Entity 303 is “a rogue developer seeking revenge through code. The story follows a Minecraft employee who was fired by Notch, the creator of the game. After he was fired, he decided to take revenge on players and developers under the name “entity.303.” As “entity.303,” he would corrupt players’ worlds and slowly take control of the game.^{[12]
