The consequences & outcomes for both decisions in Dispatch
PDF download Download Article

Dispatch isn’t short on difficult decisions, and one of the first truly hard choices you’re faced with is cutting either Sonar or Coupé from the team. Before you make that choice, you might be wondering what the consequences are—and we’re here to enlighten you. Cutting Sonar from the team turns him into an enemy that you’ll have to defeat later, and the same goes for Coupé if she’s the one you cut instead. In this guide, we’ll explain everything that happens after cutting Sonar (and Coupé), and how to save them at the end of the game.

What are the consequences of cutting Sonar?

Cutting Sonar means he’ll be off the Z-Team and leave the building angry at Robert and SDN. Malevola will also be angry and leave her next shift early (but she’ll return). Sonar will reappear during the final episodes of the game, where he’ll join Shroud. If you defeat him, you can bring him back to the Z-Team.

Robert will fire Sonar at the end of the third episode (“Turnover”). After making the decision to cut Sonar, you’ll move to a scene in the conference room between Robert and Sonar. Robert will tell Sonar that he’s cut, and Sonar will react angrily, leaving his tie behind (which Robert keeps). However, that isn’t the last time you’ll see Sonar in the game—and if you play your cards right, you can even bring him back to the Z-Team.[1]
    • Coupé will also be grateful to Robert for deciding to keep her on the team.
    • In the meantime, you’ll have to play the next shift in “Restructure” without Sonar (but you’ll keep Coupé, since the decision is between the two of them).
  2. 2
Malevola will be upset with Robert and leave work early in “Restructure.” Malevola is Sonar’s sponsor and has synergy with him on the Z-Team. So, if you decide to cut him, she’ll be visibly angry with Robert (and even refuse to do certain jobs during that first shift in “Restructure”). She’ll also leave early to go check on Sonar—but that doesn’t mean she’s gone for good. She’s still on the team, and she’ll return later in the episode!
    • Unfortunately, it’s impossible to cut Sonar or Coupé without causing some issues, as cutting Coupé will upset a different member of the team.

Sonar will reappear as one of Shroud’s henchmen. During the final two episodes of Dispatch, Sonar will help Shroud destroy the city, wreaking havoc in several locations. After the end of the game, when Shroud is defeated, there are two ways to deal with Sonar: forgiving him and bringing him back to the team, or sending him to jail for his crimes.[2]
    • Additionally, if you don’t defeat Sonar yourself, you won’t get a choice—he’ll go to jail no matter what.
    • However, once forgiven, Sonar will rejoin the Z-Team and be there for the last scenes of the game.
    • Still, if you cut Sonar, you won’t be able to send him on calls or benefit from any of his abilities for the rest of the game (as he only returns to the team at the very end).

What happens if you cut Coupé in Dispatch?

  1. 1
Coupé will be dismissed from the team, with Sonar remaining. Basically, whatever doesn’t happen to one will happen to the other—so, cutting Coupé leads to her angrily leaving SDN and leaving a knife behind, which Robert keeps. Sonar, on the other hand, will be grateful that Robert decided to keep him on (and express that in a later episode).[3]
    • The only difference between cutting Coupé and cutting Sonar is their stats and abilities. Whoever gets cut won’t be usable anymore—and neither will their abilities.
  2. 2
Punch Up will be upset that Coupé was cut. Just as Malevola will be upset if Sonar is cut, Punch Up will be angry with Robert if Coupé is cut. He’ll leave work early (instead of Malevola) to check on Coupé—but, once again, he’ll return later on. Additionally, upsetting either Punch Up or Malevola doesn’t change their relationship with Robert going forward; the story will unfold the same either way.
    • Neither Punch Up nor Malevola will hold a grudge for too long, either; they’ll make comments here and there, but ultimately accept Robert around the same time everyone else does (in episode five, “Team Building”).
  3. 3
Coupé will join Shroud instead of Sonar. Shroud’s villainous plan will unfold during episodes seven and eight of Dispatch—with Coupé leading his minions rather than Sonar. If you manage to defeat Coupé and thwart her plans, you’ll have the choice to either forgive her and bring her back to the team or send her to jail.[4]
    • Just like Sonar, you have to defeat Coupé to have a choice at all; if you don’t, she’ll go to jail no matter what.

Should you cut Sonar or Coupé in Dispatch?

  1. There’s no right or wrong choice; it’s solely up to you. Sonar starts as the only character who’s really set up with high Intellect—so, some consider cutting him to be the “harder” route in-game. However, you can always give Coupé Intellect when you level her up, or set another character up as Z-Team’s intellectual lead. So, really, there’s no wrong decision here. It’s a matter of personal preference first and foremost!
    • There may be more consequences for cutting either Sonar or Coupé in future seasons of Dispatch, but for now, that’s just speculation. The only guaranteed consequences are the ones above.

How to Get Sonar Back in Dispatch

  1. Defeat Sonar during the final episode of Dispatch. During episode 8, Sonar will be leading the charge to destroy LA County if you cut him previously. If you want him back on the team, you’ll need to defeat him during your dispatch shifts. There’ll be several opportunities to attack Sonar, with the goal of draining his health as quickly as possible. Take each opportunity and complete the attack; then, choose “Forgive” at the end of the game to bring him back to the team.[5]
    • If you cut Coupé, their positions will be reversed, with Coupé destroying LA instead of Sonar. So long as you defeat Coupé the same way, you can bring her back to the team as well.
