How to Uninstall an Inwall Air Conditioner

If you have one of those old in-wall air conditioners, you can pull it out and fill in the hole yourself

  1. Step 1 Remove any trim on the inside and cut away all caulk on the outside.
  2. Step 2 Remove the front of the A/C.

  3. Step 3 Remove the motor and fins.
  4. Step 4 Remove the metal shell, use the wonder bar to pry it out of the wall.
  5. Step 5 Frame the opening with 2-by-4s and cut a piece of drywall that will fit.
  6. Step 6 Screw the drywall into the 2-by-4 frame and use the joint compound to cover any holes.
  7. Step 7 Press tape into the joint compound and add another thing layer of joint compound.
  8. Step 8 Cover screw heads with joint compound.
  9. Step 9 Spread a layer of mud over the joints again.
  10. Step 10 Wait for the compound to dry and then sand it smooth.
  11. Step 11 Insulate the opening with fiberglass insulation, the paper side goes towards the inside of the home.
  12. Step 12 Measure and cut a piece of plywood to cover the hole and screw it into the 2-by-4 frame.
  13. Step 13 Nail in the siding and/or shingles.
  14. Step 14 Paint the inside/outside as you like.
