What Are Green Flags in Dating?

  • Being a good communicator. Healthy communication is an essential part of a successful relationship, so if a potential partner has great communication skills, this is a major green flag. This includes being an active listener who pays attention to what you're saying, as well as being able to effectively voice their own thoughts and emotions.
  • Being trustworthy. A relationship is nothing without trust, so it's a great sign when someone is true to their word. If you feel like you can easily believe what a potential partner has to say and you can rest assured that they're being honest, this is definitely a green flag.
  • Being reliable. Does this person show up on time? Do they follow through on plans they make with you? Do they call or text when they say they will? This type of consistency is a major green flag in dating because it shows they're taking the relationship seriously, and they respect your time!
  • Being independent. In a healthy partnership, both people have their own lives outside of the relationship, and they're able to balance togetherness with their individual interests and needs. It's a big green flag if someone is independent in this way, rather than codependent.
  • Having shared values. If a relationship is going to last long-term, it's important that your morals and values line up. When someone cares about the same things you do and has a similar belief system to you, this is a great sign for the success of your partnership!
  • Having a similar sense of humor. Relationships are serious business, but it's essential that you're able to laugh and be playful with each other, too. If a potential partner has you cracking up all the time and laughs at the same things you do, definitely count this as a green flag.
  • Being able to compromise. A partnership requires compromise, so having an "it's my way or the highway" type of attitude definitely isn't sustainable. When someone's able to meet you in the middle or adjust their opinion when presented with new info, this is a big sign that they'd make a good partner!
  • Respecting your boundaries. When you express your needs and boundaries to this person, do they respect them? Or, do they push back on them, try to get you to change your mind, or ignore them completely? Remember, a partner should always respect your boundaries and make you feel safe in your relationship![1]
