PDF download Download Article

If you’re looking for an addictive puzzle game similar to Tetris, Block Blast is the perfect way to pass the time. The game’s rules are as simple as placing blocks onto a grid to complete rows and columns, but it takes a bit of strategy to get the highest scores. Keep reading, and we’ll walk you through the basics of how to play and help you get rid of pesky ads.

The Best Block Blast Strategies

  • Plan out where to put blocks before placing them.
  • Complete a row or column every 3 blocks to increase your combo.
  • Keep large empty spaces open in the middle of the board.
  • Finish multiple lines with a single block when you have a larger combo.
  • Take a break and come back to the game later if you’re feeling stuck.

  1. A game of Block Blast starts with an empty 8 x 8 grid of squares. Each round, you’re given 3 random block shapes that look similar to Tetris pieces. Click and drag the blocks onto empty spaces where they fit on the grid.
    • Any blocks you place stay on the grid until you fill all the squares in the same line or column.
  2. Any time you place a block into an open space on the grid, you earn points based on how many squares it contains. If you complete a full row or column of squares, you earn at least 10 points and the line clears.

  3. When you complete a line, it adds to your combo multiplier and boosts your score even more. If you finish a line with the 3 blocks you’re given during the round, the multiplier increases by 1 for the following round.
    • If you don’t complete a line, then the combo multiplier drops back down to 0.
  4. Over the course of the game, the grid fills up with more blocks. If you ever run out of empty space on the grid and can’t place any of your blocks, the game immediately ends and presents your final score.

Block Blast High Score Strategies

  1. If you’re trying to figure out where to place your blocks, click on them and drag them over the grid without letting go. This helps you visualize the space the block takes up and reveals where oddly-shaped gaps may appear.[1]
    • Just make sure you drag the block back to the starting position so you don’t accidentally place it on the grid.
  2. Plan out your turn as soon as your 3 blocks are revealed for the round. As long as you can complete 1 line with the 3 blocks, you maintain and add to your combo so you’ll get higher scores the longer your game goes on.[2]
    • Try to wait until placing your third block to complete a line so you can use the other blocks to plan ahead. If placing one block first would make you clear another line during the round, do it for the points.
  3. Try to keep your blocks grouped together instead of spreading them out across the grid. When you finish placing a round of blocks, try to complete lines to leave a lot of open space in the middle and around the sides of the board. Avoid leaving oddly-shaped gaps between blocks because they’ll be harder to fill later on.[3]
    • Sometimes you can force certain blocks to appear by leaving empty spaces that are the same shape as the block you want. For example, if you want an L-shaped block, try leaving an L-shaped empty space on the grid.
    • Leave space for larger blocks, such as 3 x 3 squares and L-pieces.
  4. As your combo builds, create opportunities where you can complete multiple lines by placing a single block. Completing multiples brings in a ton of extra bonus points, especially when you have a combo in the double or triple digits.[4]
  5. If you’re not sure where to place your blocks right away, wait a little while to look over your options and the possible outcomes. If you’re still not feeling confident, close out of the app and come back later when you have fresh eyes.
    • If you wait to place blocks, the game also highlights potential areas where one of your blocks fits on the board.
  6. If you’re starting a fresh game, experiment with different layouts and block placements to see what works best. Sometimes you’ll get lucky and find moves or new strategies that you wouldn’t have noticed before.
