In Phasmophobia, the Music Box is one of the cursed possessions you can find around the map. Only one cursed possession will spawn in each game. In this article, we'll go over what the Music Box does, how to use it, where to find it, and some tips and strategies for using it.

Phasmophobia Music Box

  • The Music Box is one of the seven cursed possessions that can spawn on a map.
  • The Music Box is used to locate or see the ghost, so you can find their favored room or take a photo/video of them.
  • If you throw the Music Box on the ground, it will immediately start a cursed hunt.

  1. There's a 1 in 7 chance that the Music Box will spawn when you start up a new round of Phasmophobia.
    • The purpose of the Music Box is to either determine what type of ghost you're dealing with or to locate the ghost's favorite room.
    • The Music Box can only be used once per game, and it can't be used during a ghost hunt.
    • If you use the Music Box during the setup phase, it will end the setup phase early.[1]
    • The Music Box can initiate a cursed hunt if certain prerequisites are fulfilled.

How to Use the Music Box

  1. If you've found a Music Box in your game, pick it up. The box will open once it's picked up, but it won't be activated yet.
    • If you're not sure where the Music Box is located, check out the list of below.
  2. Make sure you set the box down using the Use key (right-click on PC, A on Xbox, and X on PlayStation). If you throw the box down, a cursed hunt will immediately be initiated, so make sure to place it.
    • There are two ways to use the Music Box: to find out what type of ghost you're dealing with, or to find the general location of where the ghost likes to hang out.
      • To find out what type of ghost you're hunting, you must place the Music Box within five meters of the ghost. This will start a ghost event where the ghost will become visible and walk towards the box.
      • To find where the ghost's favorite room is, the Music Box must be within 20 meters of the ghost. If it's within 20 meters (but more than 5 meters), the ghost will sing, showing its location.
  3. This is for a couple of reasons:
    • If a player is too close to the Music Box when the ghost appears, it will trigger a cursed hunt.
    • Being within 3 meters of a Music Box that is playing music will significantly drain the player's sanity. Reaching or being at 0% sanity while the Music Box is active will trigger a cursed hunt.
  4. If you're trying to use the Music Box to get the ghost to show itself, take a picture of the ghost as soon as you can see it. Make sure you're not close to the Music Box when you take the photo, or else you may suffer sanity loss or trigger a cursed hunt.[2]
    • A cursed hunt will also trigger if the ghost walks towards the Music Box for more than five seconds, so it's best not to be close to the ghost when it's walking towards the Music Box.
    • If you're only using the Music Box to locate the ghost, you can pick it up and bring it outside once you've found the ghost. Once the Music Box is brought outside, it will stop draining sanity, and you won't risk it causing a cursed hunt (though the song will technically keep playing).

Tips & Strategies

  1. 1
Only use the Music Box if you know where the ghost is. While you can use the Music Box to find the location of the ghost, many players warn that this can be risky.[4] The best way to use the Music Box is to lure the ghost out of hiding so you can take a photo/video of it and/or identify it, and then you can leave to avoid starting a cursed hunt.
  2. 2
Always place the Music Box before switching to another item. If you switch to another item when holding the Music Box, it'll be tossed on the ground, which will immediately start a cursed hunt. If you want to get a photo or video of the ghost, first place the Music Box, then switch to your camera.
  3. 3
Throw the box from a safe location if you want to trigger a cursed hunt. The Music Box can be used to easily start a cursed hunt, but doing so close to the ghost can be dangerous (or fatal). If you want to use the box to start a hunt, make sure you throw it from a safe area so you can escape easily.
  4. 4
Bring certain items to mitigate the Music Box's effects in smaller maps. The Music Box can be tricky to use on small maps, as it can be hard to get far enough away from the box to avoid triggering a cursed hunt. However, there are some items you can bring with you to mitigate these effects:
    • Bringing a tier III Crucifix can stop a cursed hunt when carrying the Music Box. If the ghost event begins (with the ghost visible and walking towards the Music Box), throw the Music Box down to start a cursed hunt, then switch to the Crucifix to immediately stop it.
    • Bringing Incense, tier III Salt, and/or tier III Sanity Medication can help with escaping the ghost and maintaining your sanity.
  5. 5
Don't use the Music Box if you suspect the ghost is a Wraith. If you activate the Music Box and the ghost is a Wraith, it can teleport to the player holding the box. This will immediately start a cursed hunt, and the player holding the Music Box will likely die.
