Fun Facts About I Love LA

  • Rachel Sennott ranted about her life to HBO executives, and that got the show picked up. Before I Love LA got picked up, Sennott had a pitch meeting with HBO executives where she brought two pilots. When she entered the meeting, though, the executives simply told her to tell them about herself. She proceeded to talk about her relationship struggles, how much she missed her best friend, and a host of other things during the meeting, all but the pilots she was pitching. After the meeting, her manager called her and told her that HBO wanted to pick the show up, but rather than specifying which pilot, they simply said it was based on what they had all talked about. Who would’ve thought Rachel’s spiral would’ve led to one of the best new shows on HBO’s roster?
  • Out of everyone, Rachel Sennott (who plays Maia) thinks True Whitaker (who plays Alani) is the most addicted to her phone. In an interview with Vanity Fair, Sennott chose Whitaker as the one who’s most addicted to her phone, and Whitaker stood on it, saying she was holding herself back from checking her phone at that very moment! It makes sense, too. You’ve gotta be a little chronically online to be able to play a free-spirited character like Alani Marcus.
  • Before it was called I Love LA, the show was called The Untitled Rachel Sennott Project. It had this title for months after its announcement, but it was eventually changed to I Love LA. The name is based on one of Sennott’s viral videos, namely a skit where she repeats “Come on…it’s LA!” while naming off some of the toxic traits of famous Angelenos.
  • The show is inspired by Rachel Sennott’s personal experiences moving from New York City to Los Angeles. After a long rant that got the show picked up by HBO, Rachel Sennott based the plot of the series on the emotional and lifestyle shifts she dealt with after moving from one coast to another. “I put pieces of myself in all of the characters,” she told TV Insider in an interview.
