When you’re planning a kid’s birthday party, one of the biggest things to keep in mind is how old the kids are and how long their attention span is. If you're planning a birthday party for four- and five-year-olds, you're probably going to get them to do things for about five minutes. So, when you're planning, keep in mind that young kids are going to get bored, they're going to break rules, and they're going to want to just play. But if you have tweens or teens, they can handle longer activities.
As for food, kids don’t need gourmet meals. They’ll take a pizza, but the focus is being with their friends versus the food.
Generally, an awesome birthday party is all about doing what the person you’re celebrating wants, not what you as a party planner want. I have a six-year-old and I have a twelve-year-old, and their birthday parties are totally different. I typically ask the birthday person what kind of food they want and what kind of activities they want.
