How do you layer skincare correctly?
Start with cleanser. Then, a helpful way to think about it is to go from thinnest to thickest viscosity. You'll do serums first, then gels, lotions, and creams, and the last thing to go on will be your SPF. You usually want to wait about two to three minutes in between products so they layer nicely. If you're using retinoids, just make sure you're using them at night. Also, if you're experiencing irritation from a retinoid, we teach our patients to sandwich their moisturizer. Meaning, put moisturizer on, wait a couple of minutes, put the retinoid on, wait a couple more minutes, and then finally put moisturizer on again.
How do I get rid of blackheads on my nose?
Blackheads and whiteheads are known as non-inflammatory or comedonal acne. The best way to treat them is with the retinoid category. Retinoids turn over our cells faster to clean out those pores. You have to be careful when you're using retinoids because they can cause skin irritation. Combine them with a really good non-comedogenic moisturizer. If I see a nose that has a lot of congestion and blackheads, I like to start them on a retinoid and then bring them back for a facial that will kind of just suck all that stuff out.
How can I get glass skin?
This is a great question. It's important to note that in clinical studies evaluating the time frame needed to clear up skin issues, physicians typically say that it takes somewhere between 6 and 12 weeks. As a physician, it's really important to be an educator to the patient and give them realistic expectations. Help them understand when they can expect to be 50% better, 90% better, and so forth. For the future, I recommend that people come to a dermatologist as soon as possible if they have an important event coming up.
What does fungal forehead acne look like?
What people might call "fungal acne" is just acne vulgaris–classic acne. I've been in the dermatology world 25 years, and I just treat acne as acne (unless it's not responsive to treatment). I have never had a patient that doesn't respond to traditional acne treatments.
How do I get rid of strawberry legs fast? It's giving me the ick.
First off, start with a sharp razor. Use a brand new razor, warm water, and shaving cream. Shave in the direction of the hair, not against it. If you're still having problems, think about using an electric razor rather than a straight razor. Avoid tight clothing, because when you have a lot of friction, the clothing might cause razor burn. Finally, laser hair removal is a great option for the elimination of razor bumps.
